The ARPAnet, Advanced Research Projects Agency, was the precursor to today’s internet. It was the first ever packet-switching network and an exciting departure from circuit-switching networks that were used for voice communication. BBN was awarded the contract for developing the network. The network was to be composed of computers termed Interface Message Processors (IMP).
